There are many reasons for increases in weight. Usually they are connected to emotional behaviour which drives the individual to resort to over-eating to compensate for a feeling of loneliness, feeling bad about themselves, sense of failure or rejection. However, it is important to clear with the medical profession that there are no health problems such as thyroid or diabetes.

Sometimes people share a belief that has been passed on in the family, such as “all our family are fat, so you will be too”. When the habits are examined, it is often discovered that they have been eating food that is loaded with fat or sugar. By changing the habits to healthy ones, and installing programs that assist the person to like foods that are good for them, the individual is able to establish a new way of living. Also, it is important to install new beliefs that they can be slim.

Some people binge eat and then purge. By changing their beliefs about themselves and giving them tools to deal with emotional drivers, they are able to establish a new way of seeing themselves. One of my clients made a comment “I can’t believe how easy this is”.

Exercise alone will not necessarily result in losing weight. A few of my clients are professional dancers - yet they still gained weight. On examination of their lives, it has been found that they had emotional reasons for putting on weight. By dealing with the emotional situations, it was easy for them to return to their slim selves.

Establishing exercise that fits the individual’s way of life and enjoyment is essential. Some hate working out at the gym, but may find swimming, dancing or walking more attractive. One of my clients had moved near a beach and found that she could get up early in the morning and go for a walk along the beach with a friend.

Many people think they need to diet. This results in Yo Yo dieting, as they go off the diet and put on more weight. By establishing a realistic pattern of eating and eating foods that will support them with low GI ingredients that eliminate the “snacking” on cakes and biscuits, they will steadily decrease their weight and establish good health.

It is then possible to install programming that will bring them to their ideal size. It is important to establish the desired size, rather than weight, as muscle weighs more than fat. As the increase of exercise will build muscle, which in turn burns fat, it will be important not to weigh oneself but rather measure size, as clothes become too big.

The most important thing is to establish a life-style that can be maintained forever, with lots of choices that make happiness a priority.
